Q: What’s one class in high school that you thought was very interesting? Why?
A:I’ve never been a history buff by any means, but I found AP US History to be particularly interesting. Sometimes, it’s nice to get away from the numbers and discuss the ins and outs of United States policy in the past, the now and the future.

Q: What’s one of your strengths in academics? What’s one of your strongest extracurricular activities? Explain.
A: Academically, math has always been a strong suit. I’m really interested in the close interaction of math and physics.
As far as extra-curriculars, I’ve started playing some chess again. I stopped in sixth grade, but this winter, a friend got me playing again, and we, the Carmel Chess Team, ended up winning the State Team Championship, which was awesome!

Q: What are some achievements that you’re most proud of? Why?
A: I’m extremely proud of Carmel’s second place finish at the National Economics Challenge. It wasn’t just the determination but also the teamwork of the Carmel Economics Team. At the beginning of the spring break, we were a rag-tag team, but by the end of the competition, we were a fine-tuned, cohesive unit.

Q: How did it feel to give the commencement speech as Distinguished Graduate of Carmel High School?
A: I was extremely honored to be a part of the graduation ceremony. I was a little nervous speaking since I was the first one in the lineup of speakers, but once I got started, I grew more comfortable with the podium. I hope that I was able to send a positive message to my classmates as we ended our high school careers together.

Q: How did it feel to be honored by Governor Daniels in his presentation of Indiana’s Mr. Math award?
A: Actually, I didn’t know until 30 minutes before the presentation that I was being presented the award, so, honestly, I was surprised. I was sitting in SRT when one of the assistant principals called and told me to run down to the media center. To have Governor Daniels come personally to Carmel High School to present me with the award was an extreme honor and a moment that I know I will never forget. I was also humbled that members of the student body and administration were there to support me as I accepted the award. Overall, it was an awesome way to cap off my senior year.

Q: What skills do you feel are needed to achieve success in science and math competitions?
A: Determination and love for what I do were pretty key for me. I think my love of math and science was my strongest motivation and helped me find success.

Q: What advice do you have for current or future high school students?
A: Keep at it, but be smart with your time. If you feel like you need a break, take one, but in the long term, don’t give up.

Youkow will be attending Yale University where he will major in Math/Physics.
