Recently released employment figures show Indiana led the nation in private sector job creation in April. According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the 15,400 new jobs added in Indiana last month represents a growth rate of six times the national average.

The strong performance in April bumped Indiana’s unemployment rate down to 7.9 percent, putting the state below the national average of 8.1 percent. It is the fifth consecutive month the state’s unemployment rate has declined, reaching the lowest level it’s been since 2008.

Here are some additional highlights of the state’s April employment report:
• Indiana accounted for about 12 percent of the U.S. private sector jobs created in April.
• Indiana’s job growth in April outperformed all of our neighboring states combined.
• Indiana is second in the nation in manufacturing job growth in April.
These numbers are a further indication that Indiana’s economic climate is encouraging private sector job creation. State lawmakers must continue to develop and protect low-tax, pro-growth policies so that hardworking Hoosiers are positioned to continue leading the nation in job gains.
